An artist is someone who creates something out of nothing; I have never considered myself an artist before I became a New Paltz student. I was a creative person who had emerging talent, however since my freshman year here I have learned skills and developed techniques to make my talent into promise. Although I have not picked a concentration or developed a focus in my work, I have been working on self-expression and development. It is difficult to know who I am as an artist, if I do not know who I am as a person. This can be seen in my work from freshman year, I was afraid, unsure and not confident. This is evident in my line quality and media choice. As time progressed into my sophomore year, I knew who I was but was still not as comfortable being an artist. I began to experiment and explore with media as well as develop technical skills. I am still working on this in my artwork, however I am more comfortable and take on more challenging projects. Each medium I use tells me more about my self and my skills. Each piece or project is a new opportunity and chance for development. The steps I am currently taking in my artwork will continue through out my career even after I find my concentration. As a teacher and an artist you are always observing and learning therefore I believe I am at the most vital point in my career as an artist; the changes I make as well as the lessons I learn will stay with me forever.
