A) The place I am dealing with is the upstairs full bathroom in my house. It has a shower that is also a bath tub, a toilet, sink and medicine cabinet. It is shared by five girls and can get very messy.
B) The questions I am asking/exploring about are how do people use this space differently? How many people use this space a day? How often is this space used? How many purposes does this space have? Who cleans this space and how do they do that?
C) I plan to investigate the space/place by interviewing the people who use the bathroom in my house, taking pictures of the space at multiple points throughout the day and week, and interviewing people who do not live here but use my bathroom.
D)
An artists whose work I am using for inspiration is Jackson Pollock
E) For my project I plan to place a piece of paper on the bathroom floor or in a flat surface of the bathroom and use it as a performance piece. I want to allow who ever uses that bathroom to treat it as if they were treating the bathroom. I will only use materials that can be found in the bathroom so the piece has true authenticity.
Sara,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very interesting idea you have for the studio exploration project. In the first blog, you mentioned all the different surfaces in the bathroom. Right away I think of tile, fabric, porcelain, this coming from the Interior Decorator and Ceramics major in me. It's funny when you think about it, all the shiny, white pristine surfaces in a bathroom. Then, the contrast of all the unsanitary activities that occur in that space. It might be helpful to consider that idea when making your piece. The Jackson Pollack performance piece will work very well as a documentation of all these different things that happen in the bathroom. You might want to wear gloves when you finally pick it up of the floor though ;)
I agree with Shannon that the performance piece aspect of your idea can be very beneficial. I took can attest to the amount of makeup and hair products that can go awry in the bathroom making it quite the messy area. Exploring the idea of sanitation verse cleanliness of the materials will be very interesting to see played out in your piece.
ReplyDeleteI think this idea is really interesting. I think the idea of using the bathroom and it's users as the key to making the art is very intriguing. I agree with what Shannon and Amanda said, with the exploration of cleanliness. I definitely think Pollack would be a good artist to look at for this project.
